Here at TuningEmporium, we have again been tuning this engine for a number of years.
The engine produced 136bhp and 199lb ft from 1994 to 1998/9, when it then produced a little more torque at 207lb ft. Whilst a very smooth engine, it never really had the power to shift Solihull’s finest off the line.
There is two main routes to tune these engine, either with an ECU chip upgrade
or with one of our tuning boxes. Both can improve MPG consumption.
For fitting of our tuning boxes on the P38, we suggest you remove the inlet manifold for better access to the fuel pump. And whilst its off the rubber seals can be inspected and where fitted the EGR can be blanked as well. They are normally fitted to engines 1998 onwards.
Then in the other part of the wiring harness we supply, connect to the boost sensor as well.
When putting manifold back togther it can be recommended to upgrade to our silicone hose set as well, as most standard hoses split after a while
Power gains for either an ecu chip upgrade or tuning box, add around 35 to 40 bhp over standard and up to 60lb ft. We have found from our customer feedback the tuning boxes have the edge for economy.
But we can also make the P38’s a lot faster with our tuning box, as we can set up the fuelling a lot easier without having to remove the ecu each time. Ideal if the M51 engine is used in competition.
